Exiting or Selling Your Business

Running a business is very different from selling a business. These two very distinct activities require very different skill sets. Ted Turner aside, most business owners don’t posses both. If you do, you are a rare bird, but should get some assistance anyway.

First, there must be a rational determination of value. I have never known a business owner who would admit to the fair market value of his business. You guessed it, they usually are a little optimistic about values.

Second, allocation of time to the selling activities may adversely affect the ongoing business operations and the customer base. The owner needs to be out in front of the customer, especially when they eventually learn of the efforts at selling the business.

Third, good cop, bad cop requires a second party. Having an intermediary gives a negotiating advantage to the seller.

Fourth, you have to be able to dance. Enticing a buyer to the floor and taking a couple of spins requires a certain amount of grace and a little talent (just ask Jerry Rice). Having prior experience in this activity is a definite advantage.
